Research has shown that the environment affects cognition and communication, and that modifications appear to improve functioning in individuals with dementia. Unfortunately, poorly designed environmental features often contribute to unsatisfactory responses or behaviors in individuals with cognitive impairment. This article will discuss the impact of the environment on orientation and wayfinding and provide some suggestions for effective modification in long-term care facilities.
